Rocky Mountain Nationals 2015

On March 21st and 22nd, Caleb Austin and Coach Broeckelman traveled to Denver, Colorado to compete in the Rocky Mountain Nationals Wrestling Tournament.  Caleb Austin competed at 138 pounds in the 18 and under division while Coach Broeckelman competed in the Open Division at 157 pounds.  Caleb Austin started his day off with a pin in the first round of his 64-man bracket.  Caleb then suffered a 9-8 loss in the 2nd round.  During this match, Caleb suffered an injury that would later require him to forfeit out of the tournament.  In his first match on the backside, Caleb won by tech fall.  After talking with the trainer before the match and after, it was recommended that Caleb forfeit out of the rest of the tournament to prevent further injuring himself.  Caleb went 2-2 on the weekend. “I was very happy for Caleb minus the fact that he got injured,” stated Coach Broeckelman. “I know Caleb is also disappointed, but I am glad he realized he needed to take care of his body first.  Caleb had a very good chance at placing and/or winning this tournament, it was just to bad that he suffered the injury.”  Coach Broeckelman also competed alongside Caleb in the open division.  Coach Broeckelman went 3-2 on the weekend with 3 falls to take 4th place.  “I had a blast getting out there and competing again.  I plan on going again next year and maybe finding

a few more tournaments to compete in as well.”  Coach Broeckelman competed in a 16-man bracket, being the 2nd oldest person in his bracket.  Next action for Caleb will be in Cedar Falls, Iowa at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals Tournament.  “Thanks to those that came out and watched Caleb and I, and also those that helped Caleb make this trip happen.   It will be interesting to see where his last national tournament takes him for his college choice.”  Be sure to like the Facebook page to see videos of this past wrestling tournament and to stay up-to-date with Caleb’s matches in Iowa.

321A State Wrestling

On February 27th and 28th, the Greeley County Jackrabbit wrestling squad sent Caleb Austin to the                                                                321A State Tournament to try and make school history.  Caleb won his first match by fall over Afkers                                                                of Burlington.  He then went on to win by major decision over Smith of Minneapolis 15-5 in round                                                                    two.  This win secured Caleb a State Medal for the tournament but he was not done yet.  Caleb                                                                       went on to beat Wessling of Beloit, who was the eventual 3rd place finisher, 5-1 to advance to the                                                                   State Championship match.  “Caleb had an amazing first day.  His match with the Beloit wrestler                                                                     came down to the last 20 seconds when his takedown finally opened up,” stated Coach Broeckelman. “The first day was a rush, but nothing to what the 2nd day of the tournament came to be.”  After making weight Friday night, Caleb as able to sleep in and enjoy his morning as his match was not until Saturday evening.  Caleb would be facing off against Brandon Ball of Hoisington in the state finals.  This would be the 2nd time they have met this year, with Caleb winning the first time.  The match had a slow start but the last 30 seconds was something to remember.  Trailing by one point, Caleb shot in for a takedown with about 15 seconds left.  Caleb then hooked up a cradle and appeared to get some back points.  With 3 seconds left Brandon Ball was able to get the reversal.  The referees conferred and decided that no backpoints were awarded making the score 3-2 in favor of Ball.  Austin was your 2015 321A State Runner-up in weight class 138.  “It was such a rush of emotion in that last 30 seconds.  I am still confused on the whether the right call was made, but in the end, it does not take away from Caleb’s season.  Caleb had a record of 43-1, a 2nd place finish in state; that is nothing to be ashamed about.  As a coach this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to coach against a potential four time state champion, especially in his final match.  This will be a match that I never forget and that will be talked about amongst the wrestling community for years to come.”  Caleb Austin will be competing in multiple national tournaments over the next couple weeks.  Good luck in your future wrestling career.  Be sure to like the GCHS Wrestling Facebook page to keep up-to-date on wrestling events along with Caleb’s national matches.

321A Regional Wrestling at Norton

On February 20th and 21st, the Greeley County Wrestling team traveled to Norton to compete in the 321A Regional Wrestling tournament.  Caleb Austin qualified on Friday by winning his first 3 matches.  Everyone else was sent to the backside to try and battle their way for a spot to go to State.  Nathan Miller, Zach Chavez, Levi Bjorklund, Zeke Stone, Noah Leon, Dominick Tarango, and Willie Moore fought on the backside but were unable to place to qualify for the State Tournament.  “I was very happy with how all the wrestlers performed, but also happy for Caleb.  This was his first ever regional championship, along with our schools first ever regional championship,” stated Coach Broeckelman.  Caleb placed 1st place this past weekend at Norton.  This was the

first every Jackrabbit to win regionals in school history.  Caleb is looking to go 4-0 this weekend to bring home a state title as well.  “I am excited to see how the weekend turns out.  Caleb has been training hard and has wrestled most everyone on the bracket this weekend.  Bringing in a 40-0 record will bring some added pressure, but Caleb knows that the only 4 wins of the season that matter are these last 4.”  The state wrestling tournament will be held Hays starting on Friday February 27th.  Action on Friday begins at 9am and on Saturday at 8am.  There will be a pep bus traveling down on Saturday.  Please contact Mr. Huff or Coach Broeckelman for details.  Also, be sure to like the GCHS Wrestling Facebook page to stay up-to-date with how Caleb is doing this weekend.
